How to Select a Pump for Corrosive Chemical Transfer

Begin a corrosive-liquid pump selection with the exact chemical or mixture, concentration where known, temperature, required flow and head or pressure. Review compatibility of every wetted material, seal and containment component under those conditions. Chemical, magnetic and centrifugal configurations may be evaluated, but their category names do not establish resistance to a particular medium. Include startup, cleaning and upset conditions before shortlisting a configuration or requesting a quotation.

Why chemical compatibility matters

Names such as acid, alkali or chemical are too broad to identify compatible pump materials. Composition, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions need to be considered together.

  • Identify the actual medium: Provide chemical names, mixtures, impurities and any available process or safety information. State what is unknown.
  • Review the whole wetted assembly: Include casing, pumping elements, seals, elastomers and other components in contact with the process fluid.
  • Describe changing conditions: List cleaning fluids, startup temperatures and possible concentration changes. Compatibility at one condition is not a blanket approval.

Confirm the operating conditions

Supply the duty point and chemical information as one set of requirements. A flow value on its own is not sufficient for selection.

  • Flow: State the required flow, units and minimum / normal / maximum demand.
  • Head or pressure: Provide elevation, discharge requirements and pipe losses, or the calculated total head / differential pressure.
  • Temperature and liquid behavior: Include startup and operation, viscosity where relevant, gas, solids and crystallization.
  • Materials: List mandatory wetted materials and existing compatibility evidence; request review where evidence is missing.
  • Seal or isolation requirements: Describe leakage restrictions, site requirements and available sealing support services.
  • Suction and installation: Provide source-tank level, inlet pressure, pipe layout, duty cycle and utilities.

Pump types to evaluate

These categories offer places to investigate configurations. Chemical duty, magnetic drive and centrifugal hydraulics describe different aspects of a pump and may overlap.

Chemical Pump
May be evaluated when chemical handling and wetted-material compatibility are central to the application. Confirm the actual construction and seal arrangement.
Magnetic Pump
May be considered when magnetic-drive containment is being assessed. Confirm chemistry, solids, cooling and operating restrictions for the exact configuration.
Centrifugal Pump
May be evaluated when a suitable hydraulic design can meet the required flow and head. Chemical compatibility still needs confirmation for every wetted component.

Buyer questions

Use these answers to prepare the information needed for a configuration review.

What information is required for corrosive chemical transfer?

Provide the exact chemical or mixture, concentration where known, temperature, flow, head or pressure, wetted-material requirements and operating conditions. Identify missing information.

Can I choose a pump based only on the chemical name?

No. Concentration, temperature, mixtures and impurities can change the compatibility review. Include cleaning and startup conditions as well.

Why does temperature affect material selection?

Material compatibility and component limits must be checked at the actual process temperature. A conclusion made for one temperature may not apply to another.

Does a magnetic pump suit every corrosive liquid?

No. Magnetic drive describes the drive arrangement. Wetted materials, containment components and operating conditions still need a chemical-specific review.

Can centrifugal pumps be considered for chemical transfer?

A suitable centrifugal configuration may be evaluated when its hydraulics and materials meet the duty. A centrifugal label alone does not establish chemical resistance.

What if concentration or material compatibility is not yet known?

State the uncertainty in the inquiry and provide the available process information. Resolve it before treating a model as a confirmed selection.
